England Hockey Super Sixes U16 Boys

The weekend saw the U16 boys head to Wolverhampton for the National indoor finals. It was an emotional roller-coaster and definitely a tournament of two days. On the Saturday they got off to a great start in their first match against North Stafford with a 7:2 victory with six different scorers. This helped settle the nerves and allow the boys to get used to the conditions.

The next game was a much tighter affair against Clifton Robinsons. It was a fiercely contested match in which the boys went a goal behind on three occasions, but managed to draw level each time. Despite finishing strongly they were unable to clinch a winner and the match ended 3:3. All the same a good first day and everything to play for the following day.

Despite eating well on Saturday evening, and getting a good nights sleep, the team struggled to get going in their first match against Canterbury. They started slowly and allowed Canterbury to take the lead. As time began to run out the boys pushed forward trying to generate a response, but got picked off by their opponents on the counter-attack. The final result a 1:5 loss and a lot of very disappointed players.

However, all was not lost, a quick bit of maths determined that the boys could still qualify for the semis if they could beat their final opponents, Brooklands, by more than 2 goals. This would be a tough ask as they had won two and drawn one of their previous matches but this did not deter the boys and they went on to the pitch with great determination. They got off to a fantastic start scoring in the first minute and followed it up with a second goal shortly afterwards. Though they worked hard to defend their lead, Brooklands got a goal back, followed shortly afterwards by a second. This only proved to drive the Loughts boys on and even when down a player they took the lead again with a third goal. At 3:2 up the boys pushed hard for the goal that would see them in to the final. Unfortunately, nothing went their way!  With a couple of minutes to go Loughts pulled their keeper in a last ditch attempt to find that all important goal, but when the opposition broke down our attack and hit us on the break, with no goal keeper at home, there was only one outcome. The final score 3:3.

A disappointing exit from the tournament, but the boys had played some fantastic indoor hockey, competed with, and at times outplayed, some of the best teams in the country, shown real grit and determination and fought hard as a team. I hope they all enjoyed the experience, they certainly did themselves, their club and the parents proud.

Well done boys!!

Cake Sale – Sunday 26th January

Following the hugely successful U14 Boys Tour to Rotterdam last year (where they beat the U14 Dutch champions), they're on tour again this Easter to Hoorn, just outside Amsterdam. As part of the Tour parents and coaches felt it important the boys raised funds to support this so by popular demand, the U14 Boys Cake Stall is back on Sunday 26th January between 11am and 3pm. There are a number of matches that day so if you're coming up to the club, please bring a few pennies to buy a cake or two, it will be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks, the U14 Boys
