Weekend Round-Up
In a week of many factors reducing (almost eliminating!) availability - school open days and uni open days just two factors - the ladies section were all extremely flexible and resilient and managed to get all five ladies fixtures played. Thanks to all who were part of a real club effort!
Ladies 1s
On a rainy Saturday morning, miles away from home, Old Loughts 1st XI ladies played Maidstone in a gripping match with a bare 11 that had spectators absorbed. The ladies fought hard, giving the experienced team a run for their money. Unfortunately, the girls went down a goal after Maidstone scored a well-trained, short corner. Loughts fought back, penetrating the circle several times but to no avail. A quick break saw Maidstone’s second goal, Loughts didn’t let this dishearten them however! And keeping their heads up, continued to fight hard. Quick links and passing between the defence and midfield enabled for end to end action. An interception from Maidstone, led to a 2v1, giving Maidstone their third goal, ending the first half.
The second half saw Loughts coming back the stronger team. With Maidstone’s tactics established, Loughts enforced more defensive play to pressure Maidstone into turning the ball over. Unfortunately, another quick break by one of Maidstone’s subs, led to their fourth and final goal. Still going strong, Loughts continued to push Maidstone back into their 25. Great skills and connection between the midfield and forwards led to Loughts winning a short corner in the dying seconds of the game. The ball was pulled out well and expertly shot into the bottom left corner by Chelsey Toms. Overall, Loughts left the pitch optimistic and excited for future matches.
Watch the ladies take their first win of the season at HOME next Saturday, 1pm!
Men’s Academy
The Men’s Academy team got their season off to a good start in their first league match of the season, in a new division, away to Brentwood. After a tentative first 5 minutes the team worked a good goal to put them 1:0 up and settle the nerves a little. Some excellent passing exchanges, thanks to good movement off the ball resulted in another 4 goals before half time and the team took a 5:0 lead in to half time. In the second half Brentwood came back strongly and with a change in shape started to cause the defence problems and they clawed a goal back. However, the boys dug in well worked hard and eventually proved to strong for the opposition, managing to hit them on the break to score another 2 goals. Final result 7:1 with 3 goals for Archie Crowely and 1 a piece for Rob Falconer, Oscar King, Avi Sood and Sebastian Coupe, some great play at times and lots to work on to improve for future weeks.
