Cambridge City just too strong this time!

The 3rd game for the men’s 1st team saw Cambridge City, a high placed team from the year before, take the trip down to Luxborough Lane. The 1s knew that this would be a real test.

The match started with a flurry of goals for Cambridge, 3 in 20 minutes created tension and unease in the crowd. Cambridge were showing their class and Loughts didn’t know what had hit them. However, the men in purple are not a team to roll over and take such treatment. With rallying cries from the old firm in the crowd there was a resurgence; Loughts stringing passes together and breaking down the men in red. A deserved goal was scored by Elliott Smith (junior) off of a short corner, this gave momentum to Old Loughts going into half time.

The second half was a change of affairs, this time it was Old Loughtonians on the front foot. Coach Mike Williamson implemented a cunning structural move that created more space and time for the midfield to link effectively with defence and attack. The second goal came from a deflection from proud Southerner Martyn Lear off a pile-driving shot from returning injured hero Harry Kempe, the ball fell to Mitchell Jones who snuck the ball in. Cambridge responded in kind but another surge gave Elliott Smith (one of them) a second short corner and a second goal. With Loughts pushing for more, Cambridge added a 5th and final goal. The great spectacle was over but had elements of real class from Loughts especially.

Post-game midfielder Rory Coltham stated ‘It was a great game, both sides giving it all. We really got under their skin, even their coach was getting upset with us as he knew we were a real worry! Personally I’m just happy my idol Harry is back, he’ll protect me from any angry coaching staff! We’ll push on again to get back to winning ways’.

Next week the 1s face Richmond away.

Elsewhere, the men’s second team were dominant in their performance to push them further up to near the top of the table.

Brentwood Indoor Division 1

Second round for the under 18s where they took on Witham and then Bishops Stortford.  After the success of last week the boys were looking forward to trying to repeat their double winning ways.

The boys first played Witham - they looked eagerly for their first goal which took its time in coming, a shot by Nathan being disallowed for being a strike form out of the circle. This did however seem to settle the boys. After a few personal tussles between Callum and his old club Witham Loughts eventually scored with a shot from Jake. This inspired the boys who raced to a 6-0 lead with the remaining 4 goals coming from Nathan and 1 from Callum. Xav remained resilient throughout the game. Witham did manage to score a consolation goal but that didn’t detract from the hard work the team produced.

The second game was a very different affair, with Stortford only having enough for the starting line up the boys hoped by making them run around that would tire them quickly enabling space to open up. This was not Stortford’s plan, they pressed hard preventing Loughts from successfully penetrating their half. Stortford played a very physical game resulting in a couple of green cards which eventually changed to yellows as the game progressed. Loughts were awarded a flick however Nathan missed it. It seemed that the ball didn’t want to go into the back of the net no matter what. Tarun managed to eventually break through and score but this time the flood of goals did not follow. Only one more from Nathan before Stortford scored their consolation goal. This was a good learning experience for the team as Stortford played to their strengths and knowing that they had a lack of subs they pressed hard forcing Loughts to adjust their tactics and learn that patience with the ball and passing it around does eventually pay off.

It’s now on to the final round on 26 October against Wapping and Havering with the team looking to end the division unbeaten.

U12's Girls White Team Match Report 04.10.17.

It was the Girls U12 White Team's first matches of the season against Old Southendians, Southend & Benfleet and two teams from Brentwood (A & 1). Four games were played, 10 minutes each so a nice relaxing start to the season.

Overall we had a squad of 10, consisting of most of the Essex championship winning girls from last season's U10 side and they started in the first match against Old Southendians. After a few minutes, the team settled down and it was a pleasure to watch the great teamwork in terms of passing, communication and flowing hockey which resulted in a very comfortable 4-0 victory.

The next game was against Southend & Benfleet. A few new players came into the mix from the current U10's side so it took a while longer for the team to bond together but once they did we scored two quick goals delivering a 2-0 victory.

The next game against Brentwood A was an absolute nail biter. We conceded a very early goal and up until the 8th minute and we were 1-0 down. However, the girls suddenly from our own half turned the game around to deliver two excellent goals through great teamwork to win 2-1 in the end. It was at this point I lost my voice with all the shouting and excitement from the sidelines...

The last game against Brentwood 1 was lost 1-0. The girls played really well and we should have won but we couldn’t get through Brentwood's defence but the girls battled valiantly right to the end.

All in all the first tournament of the season shows how much potential there is for the White Team and hopefully they will have a very enjoyable and successful season.

Apologies for not mentioning particular goal scorers, instead I'd like to thank all the girls who played below as they all did exceptionally well

Harriet, Agnes, Korobi, Kayuki, Phoebe, Zara, Emilia, Louise, Lauren and Fiona
