Willows Go Top
After a solid win at Lee Valley last weekend the Willows approached their first home game in good spirits, although it was difficult to know what to expect. We have played no friendlies against Old Southendian 6s and the only clue was that within the last fortnight both of us had beaten Waltham Forest Otters by 2 goals to nil. A tight match looked on the cards.
But once again we turned out a strong squad and this time we looked dominating from the outset. The entire team played well, with several players building strongly in confidence and some, like Brett, having the game of their life. We all surged as one in attack, dropped back together in defence and kept shape and width. Of course, it is easier to play well when in control but we sensed the opportunity and capitalised effectively.
Six goals were scored, one by Brett with an outstanding diving strike, two from Rob including a great reflex reverse-stick volley (better timing this week, Rob), two from Charlie who seemed to be everywhere both in and out of the D, and Jacob was again rewarded with a final goal after a number of buccaneering adventurous runs through heavy defence. I’m not going to name the whole squad but all eleven players who didn’t score also know that they all had a great game. Our only weakness, if it were one, was to be so ambitious in attack that we got caught behind a few times and conceded three softish goals. But, because of the way the league table ranking system is arranged, our 6-3 win counts for more than the London Royals’ 4-1 win and so – with points and goal difference the same – our more ambitious play has just edged us ahead of them to go top of the table.
Not content with running on to the pitch without his stick a couple of matches ago, Simon “I’ll be back” Rose surpassed himself this week by running on still wearing his tracksuit jacket….and so immediately turning and leaving the field yet again. My money is on him forgetting his shin-pads next time, but you can take your pick from glove, gum-shield, shorts…..
My over-riding impression is of boundless untiring energy from everyone in the team, plus a fantastic positive “can-do” attitude. Next week we are at home at 4pm again, against third-placed Rochford 2s. Let’s have it.
GK Training Wednesday 25th October
Zara isn’t around this Wednesday so no training. She will be back for under 16 keepers on 8 November.
McMillan Coffee Morning
Just a reminder that Louisa will be holding her McMillan coffee morning this Thursday 26th October here at the club. This is a good chance to take some time out and sit and have a chat over a hot beverage with a slice of cake. Louisa has been busy in the kitchen baking so there will be plenty to go round but if you would like to donate a cake it will be most welcome.
We look forward to seeing you all on Thursday from 10:30.
Parking @ OLHC
On Saturday an ambulance was called to the club and fortunately was able to park in the designated bay so thank you for adhering to the earlier request to avoid this space. This good practice must now be observed during the rest of the week especially at evening training.
